About Us
West Indies Pantry celebrates the diversity of the Caribbean in the items that we produce and sell. Our aim is to represent the flavours, the colours and the vibrancy of the Caribbean islands and the people that call it home.
Our food items are made using plant-based ingredients allowing us to share our product with a wider audience. We are continuously experimenting with using plant-based ingredients to try to achieve similar textures and tastes to traditional recipes. Each day we get closer to achieving delicious plant-based alternatives to wonderful and flavourful Caribbean dishes.
My love for baking started when I was a teenager, my change to vegan baking came later in life when my body started rejecting dairy. As much as I loved cheese, ice cream and cake, my body rebelled, and I was left with a diet that I wasn’t enthusiastic about…
After moving to the U.K. I saw so many alternatives to dairy available! While it doesn’t taste anything like their original counterparts, it helped to give me a new normal. Having a deep love for cake, and the high prices to even buy a slice of vegan cake in the U.K. I realised I would have to start experimenting with baking again (after having stopped for many years).
My husband absolutely loathes the smell or taste of eggs in cakes, and I couldn’t tolerate milk, so I started researching how to make vegan cakes. To my surprise, there were so many recipes and the cakes tasted just like a regular cake. I felt saved… Baking became a hobby again and I would get my toddler involved. A bit of bonding and a lot of cleaning up! I had a new lease on life, and I decided to take my passion for baking and veganism and turn it into a business.
It turns out that my husband has a bit of talent as well and has done and continues to do a lot of watercolour sketches (in his spare time). All our prints (tea towels, cushion covers etc) will be based on his artwork. As much as we can, we will strive to be an eco-friendly business. Protecting the environment is not an option, it is a priority.
We also aim to give back to our communities, because every opportunity to make the world a better place should not be taken for granted. Life is a gift, and we must treat it as such.
